There were 1,500 Leeds fans in the crowd but they were to be disappointed as two goals in four minutes with less than twenty minutes to go were enough for Mansfield to win the game. Midfielder Wayne Corden struck in the seventy-second minute while striker Colin Larkin made it two in the seventy-sixth minute. United had two additional trialists to add to Deane, Hignett and Guppy. Brian Tevreden from Holland started the game at Outside Left but gave way to Danny Pugh after thirty minutes in the only substitution in the first half. Julan Joachim replaced Michael Ricketts as striker in the sixty-first minute. Danny Cadamarteri replaced Frazer Richardson in the seventy-third minute, after Mansfield had taken the lead and this was followed by Danny Pugh giving way for Steve Guppy three minutes later. In the eighty-first minute United made a double substitution when Craig Hignett replaced Jermaine Wright and new trialist Mark Kinsella replaced Matthew Spring.
